Lisa Gelman, Ph.D., CEP – College Counseling 

Lisa holds a B.A. from Smith College and an M.A. and Ph.D. in political science from the University of Pennsylvania. Since 2002, Lisa has helped hundreds of students navigate the college admissions process and write application essays that get results. She strives to alleviate the pressure that high school students and parents face as students apply to colleges. As a Certified Educational Planner and a professional member of the Independent Educational Consultants Association, Lisa regularly attends conferences and seminars to learn about the latest education and college admissions trends. Here's a list of colleges Lisa has visited recently. Her clients have been accepted to these colleges.

 

Denise – Biology, Chemistry, Middle & High School Math, SAT & ACT

Currently, a high school chemistry and forensic science teacher, Denise has also taught biology, physics, and math. She received a B.A. in Chemistry and Secondary Education at Roger Williams University and an M.A. in Education in Curriculum and Instruction at Southern New Hampshire University. Before her current teaching position, Denise was a science and math teacher for eight years at a boarding school for students with learning differences and ADD/ADHD. When she's not spending time with her two young children and husband - going to the zoo is one of their favorite pastimes - she enjoys working out at the gym and running.

Mark – Middle School & High School Math, SAT & SSAT

Mark has over two decades of experience as a high school math teacher and has coached varsity basketball and track. He holds a B.A. in psychology from Villanova University and an MBA in finance from Boston College. Mark enjoys spending time with his three daughters and grandchildren, working out, listening to music, playing basketball, sailing, golfing, and doing yard work.

CJ – Middle School & High School Math

CJ graduated from the United States Naval Academy with a B.S. in naval architecture and marine engineering. He is currently pursing an M.S. in mechanical engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. When this busy father of two has any free time, he enjoys restoring antique vehicles, woodworking, traveling, the outdoors, wrestling, and tennis.

Arun – Middle School & High School Math, SAT & ACT Prep

Arun recently graduated from Cornell University with a B.S. and M.S. in electrical and computer engineering. While at Cornell, Arun met with small groups and tutored students one-on-one as a teaching assistant. He currently works as a software engineer. Since 2018, he has worked with the United Nations representatives to discuss sustainable engineering.

Alexis – High School & College Chemistry & Biology, Math

We are excited to welcome Alexis back to Apt Tutoring! Alexis previously worked for us after graduating with high honors from Smith College with a B.A. in neuroscience. She then went on to post-baccalaureate studies in mechanical engineering and earned her Ph.D. in biomedical engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. For the past few years, Alexis has held a teaching position in neuroscience at Smith, where she taught and advised hundreds of students. She enjoys cooking, nature, ice hockey, paddle boarding, woodworking, fitness, ice skating, and tap dancing.

James – History, English, SAT, ISEE, SSAT, Study Skills, & Admissions Essays

James has taught social studies and theology on the South Shore since 2016. He also has experience teaching middle school math. He holds a B.A. from the University of Massachusetts and an M.A. from Boston University. James is a compassionate teacher who is known for his ability to meet students where they are and inspire them. He is especially interested in American colonial history and interned at a local research library. James hopes to earn a Ph.D. in history someday. He enjoys watching movies, listening to music, and hiking in his free time.

Erin –  Science, Study Skills, SAT, SSAT, ISEE & HSPT

We are glad to welcome Erin back to our team for her sixth year with us! She has more than 15 years of experience teaching high school environmental science, math, and biology, including AP Biology. She currently teaches these subjects at a local independent school. Erin received her M.A. in education from Boston College. A mother of three, in her free time, she coaches softball, runs half marathons and marathons, and enjoys hiking.

Kelley – Middle School & High School Math, Science

Kelley graduated magna cum laude from Northwestern University with a B.S. in chemical engineering, B.M. in music, and a minor in computer science minor. Kelley has experience and enjoys working with students one-on-one in several capacities as an academic tutor and music teacher. She is currently working on her M.A. in music at the New England Conservatory and dreams of someday playing in a big city orchestra. She is a self-proclaimed foodie who also enjoys the aquarium in her free time.

Peter – Middle School & High School Math, SAT & ACT

Peter has nearly a decade of teaching experience in South Shore middle and high schools. He graduated from the University of Massachusetts with a B.S. in mathematics and received his M.A. degree from Harvard University. He is currently the math department chair at a local high school, overseeing the development of the math curriculum, observing teachers, and designing placement tests for incoming freshmen in addition to his teaching duties. He is heavily involved with the school, especially during basketball season when he coaches the boys’ freshman basketball team. In his spare time, he enjoys watching basketball and reading non-fiction.

Alana – High School & College Math, Statistics, SAT & ACT

While earning a B.S. in mathematics from Boston University, Alana tutored student-athletes one-on-one throughout her four years there. It is rare for Boston University to grant this position to an incoming freshman, but because Alana was armed with a solid foundation in math and the maturity and personality to handle the job, it made an exception. Alana also served as a resident assistant overseeing 400 students. She joined our team in 2016. Her hobbies include fantasy football, reading, and volunteering.

Jennie – College, Graduate, & Professional School Admissions Essays

Jennie holds a B.A. in classical studies from the University of Pennsylvania, an M.A. in Italian from Middlebury College, and an M.A. as well as a Ph.D. in art history from Bryn Mawr College. She has held postdoctoral research fellowships at Columbia and Princeton and began her teaching career teaching at Oberlin before joining the faculty at her current institution, where she teaches both undergraduate and graduate students. A prolific writer, Jennie has authored and edited multiple books and scholarly articles. Ever since first studying classics in Rome, Jennie has remained very connected to Italy, returning regularly for summer research and even living there on a Fulbright grant. Enamored of the city's art, architecture, and history, she broadened her interests to include interwar and post-war Italian art, architecture, and cinema. A National Endowment for the Humanities summer seminar on fascism at the American Academy in Rome further fostered her interest in the relationship between art and politics. Fluent in Italian, she continues to travel regularly to Venice for summer research and teaching. Jennie initially joined our team more than ten years ago, and we're thrilled she has rejoined us after taking a few years off. Jennie's expertise helps high school and college students successfully apply to college, graduate, and professional schools..
